The Orange Tree Sponge is a branching sponge found throughout the Caribbean Sea and tropical Atlantic Ocean. It grows in warm, shallow reefs (10–40 meters deep), attaching to rocks or coral.

It has a bright orange to reddish-orange color and a tree-like structure with upright, cylindrical branches. The surface is slightly rough with small pores used for water filtration.

Usually reaches 15–40 cm (6–16 inches) tall, though large colonies can grow even higher.

Common on coral reefs and rocky slopes where currents bring a steady flow of nutrients. It prefers clear, well-oxygenated waters of the Caribbean and tropical Atlantic.

The Orange Tree Sponge is hermaphroditic, reproducing both sexually (by releasing gametes) and asexually (by budding or fragmentation).

It is not venomous and non-aggressive, but it produces chemical compounds to deter predators and prevent overgrowth of algae or bacteria.

Fun Facts:

  • Its branching shape increases surface area for filtering seawater.

  • It plays a key ecological role by cleaning water and providing shelter for small reef creatures.

  • Its vivid color helps divers easily spot it in coral reef habitats.
