Peppermint shrimp are a group of cleaner shrimp known for their effectiveness in controlling the growth of undesirable aiptasia in aquariums. Among the various species of peppermint shrimp found locally, Lysmata wurdemanni is the most common and abundant. Typically, they are incidentally captured in traps set for economically significant crustaceans like the Stone Crab and are more plentiful during colder weather. Although they can be spotted in inshore reefs throughout the year in small numbers, often single digits, their population surges during the winter months, which coincides with the Stone Crab season, when they are found in large quantities.
