The Coral Banded Shrimp (Stenopus scutellatus) is a captivating marine crustacean that adds vibrant beauty to reef aquariums. As omnivores, they scavenge for detritus and prey on pest bristle worms. Their slender bodies and arms typically range from 2 to 3 inches in length, showcasing striking red and white bands.
Although they can be rare finds in the reef, these shrimp are often spotted by their long antennae extending from dark holes and crevices. They can be seen alone or in mated pairs, usually nestled in caves or beneath large rocks and corals. Golden coral banded shrimp make excellent aquarium additions, thriving in environments with ample hiding spots and crevices.
While they can be territorial, it’s generally best to keep only one or a mated pair in a tank. They form unique symbiotic relationships with various fish and invertebrates, helping to maintain the health of the aquarium by removing parasites and dead tissue. Their captivating appearance and beneficial behaviors make them a delightful and functional addition to any marine setup.
