The Lima Shrimp (Hippolysmata spp.) is a small reef shrimp from the Caribbean and tropical Atlantic, typically 1–1.2 inches long (body only). It has a translucent body with subtle red or orange markings and sometimes iridescent hues. Non-aggressive and peaceful, it scavenges detritus, small invertebrates, and leftover food, occasionally acting as a cleaner. Dioecious with internal fertilization, females carry eggs under the abdomen. Non-venomous and moderately easy to keep in captivity with stable reef conditions, hiding spots, and clean water.

The Lima Shrimp is a small, delicate reef shrimp commonly found in coral crevices, under rocks, and among sea fans in the Caribbean and tropical Atlantic. It is known for its translucent body with subtle red or orange markings, giving it a graceful, almost ethereal appearance.

Coloration:

Translucent or pale body with faint red, orange, or pink stripes along the body and legs. Some individuals display slightly iridescent hues depending on light conditions.

Abundance & Typical Size:

Moderately uncommon. Adults typically measure 1–1.2 inches in body length, not including antennae.

Behavior & Aggressiveness:

Non-aggressive and peaceful. Primarily a scavenger and occasional cleaner, feeding on detritus, small invertebrates, and leftover food in reef environments. Often forms small groups but generally keeps to its own space.

Reproduction & Sexuality:

Dioecious (separate sexes). Fertilization is internal, and females carry eggs under the abdomen until hatching.

Venom:

Non-venomous and harmless to humans.

Tenure in Captivity:

Moderate. Requires stable reef tank conditions, hiding spots, and clean water. Can be sensitive to poor water quality but adapts well if well cared for.
