The Checkered Nerite (Nerita tessellata) is indeed a charming little sea snail. These marine gastropods, part of the Neritidae family, live high in the intertidal zone clinging to rocks, they can endure long periods of desiccation by closing their shells and sealing in moisture with their black operculum. Since they often crawl out of the water, it's common to find them on the ground near aquariums, but if returned to water within a few hours, they will revive and "spring" back to life.
