The lightning whelk (Sinistrofulgur perversum) is a large predatory sea snail distinguished by its shell, which features lightning-like patterns, hence its name. Also, unlike most snails which coil their shells to the right, the lightning whelk coils to the left. These carnivorous creatures are diurnal, meaning they are more active during daylight hours. They inhabit shallow sandy bottoms, where they are often partially or completely buried in the sand, likely hunting for bivalves or small crabs, which are their preferred prey.

Lightning whelks range from 2 - 8 inches and females can grow to double that size but we usually only offer the smaller specimens (2-4")
