Whelk Conch Snail

$39.99

The lightning whelk (Sinistrofulgur perversum) is a large predatory sea snail distinguished by its shell, which features lightning-like patterns, hence its name. Also, unlike most snails which coil their shells to the right, the lightning whelk coils to the left. These carnivorous creatures are diurnal, meaning they are more active during daylight hours. They inhabit shallow sandy bottoms, where they are often partially or completely buried in the sand, likely hunting for bivalves or small crabs, which are their preferred prey.

The lightning whelk (Sinistrofulgur perversum) is a fascinating and striking sea snail, easily recognized by its large, spiraled shell adorned with distinctive lightning-like patterns. One of its unique characteristics is its left-handed coiling, which sets it apart from most snails that coil to the right.

As a diurnal predator, the lightning whelk is most active during the day, hunting for bivalves and small crabs hidden in the sandy substrates of shallow coastal waters. They often bury themselves partially or completely in the sand, waiting for the right moment to find their prey.

In a marine aquarium setting, lightning whelks can be an attractive addition due to their beautiful shells and intriguing behavior. However, it's important to provide them with ample space and a suitable environment, as they require a sandy substrate to mimic their natural habitat. Their carnivorous diet should also be taken into account when selecting tank mates, as they may pose a threat to smaller invertebrates. Overall, the lightning whelk adds both beauty and character to marine aquariums!

Lightning whelks range from 2 - 8 inches and females can grow to double that size but we usually only offer the smaller specimens (2-4")
